What to check on your roof and gutters before the first nor’easter: leaf buildup, flashing, loose shingles and attic warning signs in North Jersey homes.

By Universal Roofing Solutions | Last updated October 29, 2026

Before the first nor’easter, clear leaves from your gutters and downspouts, make sure water drains away from the house, look for lifted or missing shingles and worn flashing at chimneys, skylights and vents, clear debris from roof valleys, and check the attic for stains or damp insulation. In Morris and Sussex counties, plan a second gutter cleaning after the oaks and maples finish dropping their leaves.

Every winter in Morris County follows the same pattern. A nor’easter drops heavy, wet snow, it freezes at the eaves, and the roofs that were already marginal start leaking. Homeowners who check their roof in October get repairs scheduled in good weather. The ones who wait until January get an emergency tarp and a place in the queue.

This checklist covers what to check, when to do it and which jobs to leave to a roofer.

Why October Matters for Roofs in Morris and Sussex Counties

  • Leaf load. Mature oaks and maples drop heavy loads of leaves that pack into gutters, roof valleys and the area behind chimneys.
  • The first freeze-thaw cycles. Water left standing in clogged gutters freezes overnight and thaws by day. Ice expands, pulls on gutter hangers and opens seams.
  • Nor’easters. Wind-driven rain finds lifted shingles and worn flashing, and heavy, wet snow follows.
  • The repair window. Shingle and flashing repairs are easier to schedule and complete on dry, mild fall days than in January.

Fall Roof Checklist: What to Look for From the Ground

Use binoculars from the yard or a window. Do not climb onto the roof.

If you find worn flashing or debris behind the chimney, our chimney services team can clear and repair it before winter.

Fall Gutter Checklist for North Jersey Leaf Season

  1. Clear the gutters of leaves, twigs and shingle granules.
  2. Flush each downspout with a garden hose and confirm water flows freely out of the bottom.
  3. Check the pitch. Standing water in a gutter a day after rain means a low spot.
  4. Look for drips at seams, corners and end caps during the next rain.
  5. Check the hangers. A gutter pulling away from the fascia cannot carry a winter load of ice.
  6. Check the outlets. Each downspout should send water away from the foundation, using an extension or splash block if needed.
  7. Check the fascia behind the gutter for soft or rotted wood.
  8. Decide on guards. If tall trees hang over your roof, gutter guards can cut down on clogs between cleanings.

If your gutters sag, leak at the seams or overflow in every heavy rain, cleaning will not fix them. See our gutter installation and replacement options.

Ladder safety: Single-story gutters can be cleaned from a stable ladder on firm, level ground. Two-story gutters and steep roofs are a job for a crew with the right equipment.

Oaks often hold their leaves later than maples, so homes under oaks usually need that second fall cleaning.

How Often Should You Clean Gutters in North Jersey?

Clean gutters at least twice a year: once in late fall and again in spring. Homes under heavy tree cover need more.

What Winter Does to a Roof That Missed Its Fall Check

  • Clogged gutters freeze solid. Meltwater has nowhere to go, refreezes at the eaves and backs up under the shingles.
  • Weak flashing leaks. Wind-driven rain and snowmelt find every gap around chimneys, skylights and vents.
  • Loose shingles tear off. Winter wind lifts shingles that were already loose in October.
  • Heavy, wet snow loads the roof. Older or poorly ventilated roofs show stress first.
  • Overflowing water rots the fascia. Wood behind the gutters stays wet all winter.

A fall roof inspection covers the things that fail: lifted or missing shingles, worn flashing at chimneys and skylights, cracked pipe boots, exposed nail heads, valley wear and the condition of the plywood underneath. Small problems found now are a scheduled roof repair, not a winter emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I clean my gutters in the fall?

Once most of the leaves on your property have fallen. Under heavy oak or maple cover, plan a second cleaning after the last leaves drop, before the first hard freeze.

How often should gutters be cleaned?

At least twice a year, in late fall and spring. Homes with trees hanging over the roof need three or more cleanings, or gutter guards to reduce clogs.

What month is best for gutter cleaning in North Jersey?

For the fall cleaning, wait until most of the leaves on your property are down, usually late October or November, and add a second visit if oaks keep dropping leaves after that. The spring cleaning clears what winter storms left behind.

What happens if you never clean your gutters?

Water overflows against the siding and foundation, wet leaves rot the fascia behind the gutter, and in winter the trapped water freezes, pulls the gutters loose and helps ice back up under the shingles.

What does a fall roof inspection include?

A check of the shingles, flashing at chimneys and skylights, pipe boots, nail heads, valleys, gutters and the condition of the roof deck, with a clear explanation of what needs repair now and what can wait. Book one through our roof inspection page.

Can I inspect my own roof?

From the ground and from the attic, yes. Use binoculars outside and a flashlight inside. Leave anything that means walking on the roof to a roofer.

What are the signs of winter roof damage?

Ceiling or wall stains, ice building up at the eaves, shingles missing after a storm, gutters sagging under ice, and damp insulation in the attic.

Is fall a good time to replace gutters?

Yes. Fall is the last chance to get new gutters up before the leaves and ice arrive, and dry weather makes it easy to check the fascia and roof edge behind them.

Is it better to replace a roof in summer or fall?

Both work, and fall has the advantage of mild, dry days and a finished roof before the first snow.

Do gutter guards mean I never have to clean my gutters?

No. Guards reduce clogs and make maintenance easier, but gutters still need a check each season.
